The winner

I know you've all been waiting with bated breath to find out the winner of the brooch give away. Well, thanks to me and random.org I am pleased to announce the winner is... Rachel. Well done honey! Send me an email with your address, and I'll pop the brooch in the post.

In other breaking news, I've picked up Grumbles from school today to discover that she has head lice. Eeeeeew! We've spent the last hour combing through her conditioner-soaked hair, squishing each nasty in a tissue before throwing it down the loo in disgust. So. Bloody. Gross.

If anybody has any delousing tips then send them my way. I'll be hidden away in my bedroom pretending that I'm not the mother of a louse-ridden child. Yetch!

  5. Know how your feeling I just did the conditioner trick, but I now use a product called Quit nits every day and we haven't had a problem since. Good luck

  6. Unfortunately, I have become very experienced with nit combing. I still advocate the conditioner method over the chemicals. I reckon it is best to comb every day for over a week, not wait a week between combing. If she has long and thick hair, get some good movies to watch during the process...my kids now all the songs from Grease! Apparently drying the hair with a hair dryer kills the eggs, but my kids can't stand the temperature of the dryer. And sadly, prevention is the best way to go, so run a nit comb through her head every Sunday night in the bath. OMG I can't believe I'm giving nit advice.

  7. ah, the little blighters never quit do they?

I recommend using a silicon rich conditioner, e.g. Pantene to ease the use of the finest-toothed plastic comb. It MUST be done daily for 7-9 days. Pantene is well worth the investment.

Then take the child out into the sunlight and while listening to a book-tape comb through the dry hair in fine sections and remove the egg cases (the nits)which show up as tiny little pearls about 1cm or more from the root of the hair. If this is not done teh child will still LOOK like she has nits. In my experience these will ONLY be removable between one's fingernails. Sigh. Its a damnable business.

I also occasionally used the Wild CHild Tea tree and lavender stuff, but frankly the physical removal via good conditioner is cheaper and more effective, as long as it is rigorously adhered to.

Best of luck. Think of it as a bonding experience between mother and child.

Tea Tree oil mixed in conditioner works wonders. I've found this to work when none of the chemicals would - and it's a lot safer for everyone involved.

  11. Getting rid of the little critters is best done via the conditioner method, but once you have got rid of them - prevention is the key.

Go buy some good quality water soluble tea-tree oil, and some peppermint oil.

350ml water with 4 drops tea tree oil & 3 drops peppermint oil. Give it a shake & store in one of those atomiser bottles. Give the hair a spray with this solution before school each day, and not only will it smell nice, but it works as a fantastic head lice repellent.

  12. Bloody things. Just pray you're not in a class with a child with non-vigilant parents, otherwise it can go on all year like it did for us in Grade 1. It does get less gross, though, if that's any consolation! ANd I'm a firm believer in the condition and comb attack, but also used one of those tea-tree based spray-ons as a deterrent.. Jury is out on whether it actually worked, but it made me feel better.
